잠시 Firefox로 웹서핑을 하다보니 마우스 휠이 작동안 되어 해결책을 찾아봤습니다.
VMware가 아닌 실제 컴에서 설치 시디로 부팅... 엥 되네...

그래서 현재 시스템과 설치 시디의 xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) 마우스 부분을 비교해 보니 한군데가 다른...
설치 시디처럼 수정해 주니 휠이 제대로 작동되었습니다.
xorg.conf.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall 에는 "ExplorerPS/2"로 되어 있는 걸로 봐서 범인은 VMware Tools 이었습니다.
제 시스템만의 문제인지... VMware에서 Geust OS로 우분투 사용하시는 분들 좀 알려주세요. ^^

2006.12.16 Ubuntu 사이트 보니 VMware Tools 설치 후 xorg.conf 마우스 부분을 수정하라고 되어 있었네요. ^^

In order to get the scroll wheel to work again after the above install, you will need to make a minor change to the xorg.conf file.
In the "Configured Mouse" section, change the following line as indicated:
Options "Protocol" "imps/2"
If you have more than five buttons (scroll wheel counts as three), then you might need the following line:
Options "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
